The story of David moving the ark to Jerusalem in 2 Samuel 6 corresponds with two popular and contrasting views of God and worship today. On the one side is the church of consumer Christianity, which emphasizes God’s goodness. Like David, consumer Christianity primarily sees God as a means of victory, success, and blessing, leading to extravagant and celebratory worship, but it’s often more concerned with our convenience than with God’s reverence. It views God as familiar, approachable, and casual, he is a safe deity you can worship from a cushioned theater seat with a cupholder and a latte.
