One of the reoccurring themes of the psalms is lament. In fact, there are more psalms of lament and complaint than there are of worship and praise. (Which sometimes makes me wonder why we never have church services of complaint against God.) When the line of kings was broken, and foreign powers conquered Israel, numerous psalmists cried out to the Lord to explain why he had abandoned his promises. With an uncomfortable honesty, the psalms wrestle with the disconnect between a God of faithful love and a world of cruel injustice.
