Psalm 45 is a wedding song celebrating the marriage of the king and a princess. Like most marriages at the time, royal marriages were defined by political or economic practicalities rather than romance. Within the joyous poem there is an acknowledgment of the young bride’s sorrow over leaving her country and family. Without empathy the psalmist tells her to, “Forget your people and your father’s house,” and he reminds the bride that her future children will be princes and kings. Apparently, this promise of royal progeny is sufficient reimbursement for what the young woman is sacrificing.
