“If God is all-knowing, why do I have to confess my sins to him? Doesn’t he already know everything I’ve done and everything I’m going to do?” Buried in that statement is a view of prayer and confession that is incredibly anemic. We don’t pray to inform God about what’s going on, nor does he call us to confess our sins for his benefit. Confession is a discipline for our good, as we see in Psalm 32. When we remain silent about our sin it crushes our souls.
