In 2 Samuel 6, motivated by gratitude for all of God’s blessings, David decided to move the ark—the physical representation of God’s presence—into his new capitol, Jerusalem. The scene was impressive. A procession of 30,000 men, with musical instruments “celebrating with all their might before YHWH” (2 Samuel 6:5). But David’s sincere worship was also irreverent. Rather than moving the ark with poles on the shoulders of priests as God commanded, David opted for the convenience of putting the ark on a cart pulled by oxen.
