n Genesis, after six days of ordering and inaugurating his cosmic temple, God rested on the seventh day. While the Hebrew word for “rested” is accurately translated, our English word doesn’t capture all of the nuances that would have been familiar to ancient readers of this text. It didn’t just mean that God ceased from his labor. When applied to a monarch or deity, and especially when used in the context of a temple, to rest is also associated with ruling.
